The centerpiece of the project is the redevelopment of the historic Union Station, a former train station that has fallen into disrepair. Plans call for converting the station’s main hall into a grand performance venue, complete with theaters, art galleries, and a food court. Surrounding the station, a new “entertainment corridor” will be created along Pine Street, connecting it to the Gateway Arch. The corridor will feature a mix of upscale restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment venues, including a comedy club and a concert hall. According to Mayor Lyda Krewson, “This entertainment district will be a catalyst for economic growth and make downtown a place where people want to live, work, and play.” The project is expected to cost over $200 million, with funding coming from a combination of public and private sources. Construction is slated to begin later this year, with completion scheduled for 2023. In addition to creating new attractions, the entertainment district is also intended to improve accessibility and connectivity. New sidewalks and bike lanes will be added, and public transportation options will be expanded. City officials are optimistic that the new district will attract tourists from across the region and beyond. They point to the success of similar entertainment districts in other major cities, such as Boston’s Seaport District and Nashville’s Lower Broadway. “St. Louis has a rich cultural history and deserves a downtown that reflects that,” said Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed. “This entertainment district will make our city a destination of choice for people looking for a vibrant and unforgettable experience.”
