This discovery bolsters the planet’s potential for supporting liquid water and, by extension, the possibility of life. “The presence of water vapor in TRAPPIST-1e’s atmosphere is a strong indication that the planet could be habitable,” said Björn Benneke, co-author of the study. “Further investigations are needed to determine the planet’s habitability, but this is a remarkable first step.” Scientists are now planning follow-up observations with the James Webb Space Telescope, which is expected to launch in 2021. The telescope’s advanced capabilities will enable researchers to analyze TRAPPIST-1e’s atmosphere in greater detail, potentially revealing the presence of biosignatures and informing the search for extraterrestrial life.
