The colossal reptile, estimated to be over 12 feet long, has sparked both awe and caution among residents. On Tuesday evening, multiple calls to the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) reported the alligator’s presence near the intersection of South River Road and Government Street. Officers responded to the scene and confirmed the sighting, cordoning off the area to prevent any encounters. “This is a very unusual occurrence,” said BRPD spokesperson Don Coppola. “Alligators are typically found in or near bodies of water, not in the middle of a residential neighborhood.” Experts from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) have been deployed to capture the alligator safely. They believe that heavy rainfall and flooding may have displaced the reptile from its natural habitat. “Alligators can cover a lot of ground when they’re on land,” said LDWF spokesperson Adam Einck. “We’re urging residents to stay away from the area and report any sightings immediately.” The presence of the alligator has heightened awareness among residents, who are reminded to be cautious when near waterways or wooded areas. “I’m keeping a close eye on my kids when we’re outside,” said local resident Susan Jenkins. “You never know when you might encounter an alligator.” Officials are asking the public to report any alligator sightings to 911 or the LDWF at 337-261-3400. They emphasize that it is illegal to approach, feed, or harass alligators. The capture efforts are ongoing, and updates will be provided as they become available. Residents are advised to follow official guidance and remain alert to their surroundings.
