According to police, 32-year-old William Jones entered the store and approached the checkout counter with a basket full of groceries. As he attempted to pay, he handed the cashier several Monopoly bills, including $500, $100, and $50 denominations. The cashier immediately became suspicious and asked Jones if he was aware that the bills were not real money. Jones allegedly insisted that the bills were genuine and that he had won them in a Monopoly game. When the cashier refused to accept the Monopoly money, Jones became agitated and began arguing with her. Customers and employees intervened, and Jones was detained until police arrived. Officers arrested Jones for forgery and attempted theft. He was taken to Cuyahoga County Jail, where he is being held on a $5,000 bond. “This incident serves as a reminder that Monopoly money is not legal tender,” said Officer Michael Johnson of the Cleveland Police Department. “Anyone attempting to use counterfeit or toy money in transactions will be held accountable.” Jones is scheduled to appear in court next week for a preliminary hearing.
