The incident began when a concerned resident reported hearing a dog whimpering from a nearby storm drain. Firefighters and animal control officers responded immediately and determined that the dog was trapped approximately 10 feet deep. Using a combination of specialized equipment and teamwork, the rescuers carefully extracted the dog from the storm drain. The dog, a small tan and white terrier mix, was frightened but otherwise unharmed. “It was a coordinated effort between the members on scene and ACO,” said Lieutenant James Walker of the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department. “We were able to safely remove the dog and he’s doing well.” The dog was reunited with its overjoyed owner, who had been desperately searching for it since it went missing the previous day. The owner expressed gratitude to the first responders for their quick and compassionate response.
