The expansion, estimated to cost around $1.5 million, will add approximately 2.5 acres to the park, doubling its current size. The new area will feature: * A separate area for small dogs * A dog-friendly splash pad for hot summer days * Agility equipment and training obstacles * A shaded pavilion with seating for dog owners Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie praised the expansion as a “great amenity for our community.” “Our dogs are an important part of our families, and this expansion will give them a safe and fun place to play and interact,” said Cownie. Bark Park has become a popular destination for dog owners and their furry companions since it opened in 2010. The expansion will alleviate overcrowding and provide more opportunities for dogs to socialize and exercise. The park will remain open during construction, which is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2023 and be completed by the fall. Funding for the project will come from the city’s Capital Improvement Fund. “We are thrilled that the city council recognized the need for this expansion,” said Karen Turner, president of the Bark Park Friends support group. “This will provide a much-needed space for our beloved dogs.” The expansion of Bark Park is part of a broader effort by the city to improve amenities for its residents and visitors. Recent projects include the renovation of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park and the construction of a new downtown riverfront park.
