San Antonio Grapples with Coyote SurgeSan Antonio Grapples with Coyote Surge San Antonio, Texas, has witnessed a significant increase in coyote sightings, sparking concerns among residents and authorities alike. According to data from Animal Care Services (ACS), the number of coyote sightings in the city has surged in recent months. From January to April 2023, ACS received over 2,000 sighting reports, compared to just 800 during the same period in 2022. Experts attribute the surge to several factors, including habitat loss due to urban development, an abundance of food sources in neighborhoods, and the lack of natural predators. Coyotes are highly adaptable animals that have learned to thrive in urban environments, often scavenging for food in garbage cans, pet bowls, and compost heaps. The increase in sightings has prompted authorities to issue warnings and urge residents to take precautions. Coyote encounters can pose risks to both humans and pets, as the animals may become aggressive if they feel threatened or perceive a food source. “It’s important to remember that coyotes are wild animals,” said ACS Director Shannon Sims. “Residents should never approach or feed them. Keep pets on leashes and avoid leaving food outdoors that could attract them.” ACS recommends the following tips for reducing coyote encounters: * Secure garbage cans and compost bins. * Keep pet food indoors. * Avoid leaving small children or pets unattended outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active. * If you encounter a coyote, remain calm and avoid eye contact. Slowly back away and make yourself look as large as possible. * Do not throw objects at coyotes or attempt to chase or capture them. The surge in coyote sightings has also highlighted the need for a comprehensive wildlife management plan. San Antonio officials are working with state and federal agencies to develop strategies to reduce human-coyote conflicts. These efforts may include live trapping, relocation, and education campaigns to raise awareness about coyote behavior and safety precautions. By taking these measures, residents can help mitigate the risk of coyote encounters and ensure the safety of both wildlife and the community.
