Surveys conducted by the Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management (CZM) revealed that the bulge, a vast underwater sandbar, now spans approximately 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) from its southernmost point to its northern end. This represents an extension of 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) from its previous extent. “This is an extraordinary milestone for the Boston Bulge,” said CZM Director Lisa Berry. “Its growth over the past 35 years is a testament to the dynamic nature of our coastal landscape and the resilience of our marine ecosystems.” The Boston Bulge is formed by a combination of tidal currents, sediment transport, and wave action. As the tide ebbs and flows, sand and other sediments are transported along the shoreline, gradually building up the bulge. Waves also play a role in shaping the feature, eroding its eastern side and depositing sand on its western side. The extension of the Boston Bulge has several implications for the local environment. It provides valuable habitat for marine life, including fish, shellfish, and nesting birds. It also serves as a natural barrier against coastal erosion, protecting the shoreline from storm surges and flooding. However, CZM officials caution that the Boston Bulge is not immune to the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels and increased storm intensity could threaten the stability of the feature in the future. “We need to continue monitoring the Boston Bulge closely and take steps to protect it from potential impacts,” said Berry. “By doing so, we can preserve this iconic landmark for generations to come.” The Boston Bulge has long been a popular destination for boaters, swimmers, and fishermen. Its extension to a record length is a welcome development for those who appreciate the natural beauty and recreational opportunities it offers.
