The project, expected to be completed by 2024, aims to enhance the arch’s visual appeal and provide a vibrant focal point for the city’s skyline. The new lighting system will consist of approximately 4,000 LED neon tubes, arranged in a series of cascading waves. The tubes will be installed along the arch’s legs and apex, creating a dynamic display of colors that will be visible from miles away. “This upgrade will elevate the Gateway Arch to a new level of brilliance,” said Elyse Fekete, director of the Gateway Arch National Park. “The neon lighting will create a stunning spectacle at night, showcasing the arch’s architectural grandeur and making it an even more iconic symbol of St. Louis.” The project is part of a larger effort to revitalize the area around the Gateway Arch. The National Park Service is investing $380 million in the rehabilitation of the arch and the surrounding park, including new landscaping, lighting, and visitor amenities. The neon lighting upgrade is being funded by a $10 million grant from the National Civic Art Society. The society’s president, Justin Garrett Moore, said the project “will transform the Gateway Arch into a beacon of artistic and civic pride.” Construction on the neon lighting system is scheduled to begin later this year. The upgrade is expected to be completed in time for the city’s 250th anniversary in 2024. The St. Louis Gateway Arch, designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, was completed in 1965. Standing at 630 feet tall, it is the tallest man-made monument in the United States. The arch is a symbol of St. Louis and the American spirit of westward expansion.
