Installed at the Oakland Estuary, the sculpture consists of a series of 256 identical towers, each adorned with 160 LED fixtures. At night, Beacon transforms into a symphony of light, its patterns and colors changing dynamically. The installation spans nearly 2,000 feet, creating a captivating visual display that can be seen from all angles. “Beacon is a reflection of Oakland’s vibrant and diverse spirit,” said Mayor Libby Schaaf. “It brings people together, inspires conversation, and celebrates our city’s evolution.” The artwork was commissioned by the Oakland Estuary Trail Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a continuous trail around the perimeter of the estuary. Beacon is a significant addition to Oakland’s public art collection, enhancing the waterfront and making it a destination for residents and visitors alike. “I am thrilled to have Beacon as a part of my city,” said Oakland resident Maria Rodriguez. “It’s a beautiful and thought-provoking work of art that brings light and joy to our community.” Beacon is powered by renewable energy sources, demonstrating Oakland’s commitment to sustainability. The installation also incorporates interactive elements, allowing visitors to control its light sequences using their smartphones. “Beacon is a transformative public art experience that engages all the senses,” said Leo Villareal. “It encourages people to connect with the estuary and each other.” The Oakland Aglow initiative, which facilitated the creation of Beacon, aims to enhance Oakland’s public spaces through art. The city plans to continue investing in public art, bringing beauty and inspiration to neighborhoods throughout Oakland.
