San Diego Witnesses Unprecedented Shark Sighting Near Popular BeachSan Diego Witnesses Unprecedented Shark Sighting Near Popular Beach San Diegans were stunned on Saturday when multiple sharks were spotted swimming just off the coast of Mission Beach, a popular swimming and surfing destination. The sighting, which occurred around noon, drew a large crowd of onlookers and sparked concerns among beachgoers. Witnesses reported seeing at least three sharks, including a great white that was estimated to be over 10 feet long. The sharks were seen breaching the surface of the water and circling close to shore. Lifeguards immediately evacuated swimmers and surfers from the ocean and closed the beach to swimming and surfing until further notice. “It was really scary,” said one witness. “I was just paddleboarding when I saw the dorsal fin of a great white. I couldn’t believe how close it was.” Experts from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography believe the sharks were attracted to a large school of baitfish that had moved into the area. While shark sightings are not uncommon in San Diego, it is rare to see multiple sharks so close to shore. “This is an unprecedented sighting,” said Dr. James Cooper, a marine biologist at Scripps. “It’s a reminder that sharks are apex predators and that we need to respect their presence in our waters.” The City of San Diego is working with marine biologists to monitor the shark activity and ensure the safety of beachgoers. Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water until further notice and to exercise caution when swimming or surfing. “We take the safety of our beachgoers very seriously,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “We are working closely with Scripps to monitor the situation and make sure that our beaches are safe.”
