The multi-year project, dubbed “Waterfront Toledo,” envisions a reimagined riverfront district that will feature: * Enhanced riverwalk: A continuous, accessible riverwalk will connect the historic Vistula Park to International Park, offering scenic views and pedestrian-friendly amenities. * New public spaces: Public plazas, gathering areas, and event spaces will create new gathering spots along the riverfront. * Mixed-use development: Residential, commercial, and retail developments will be encouraged along the waterfront, fostering a vibrant and diverse community. * Green infrastructure: Sustainable stormwater management systems, trees, and green spaces will enhance environmental resilience and provide a natural buffer between the river and the built environment. * Cultural attractions: Museums, theaters, and art galleries will be incorporated into the waterfront district, showcasing Toledo’s rich cultural heritage. “Our riverfront has been a neglected asset for far too long,” said Mayor Kapszukiewicz. “This plan will unlock its potential and create a destination that will enhance the lives of all Toledoans.” The project is estimated to cost approximately $500 million and will be funded through a combination of private investment, public funding, and grants. The city has already secured several commitments from private developers, including the construction of a new 400-unit apartment complex and a 150-room hotel. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform our city,” said Toledo City Council President Matt Cherry. “We are confident that Waterfront Toledo will be a catalyst for growth and economic development in our downtown area.” The project is expected to be completed in phases over the next several years. Construction on the first phase, which includes the riverwalk and public spaces, is scheduled to begin in 2024. “Waterfront Toledo is a bold vision that will create a lasting legacy for our city,” said Mayor Kapszukiewicz. “We are excited to embark on this journey and build a riverfront district that we can be proud of for generations to come.”
