At approximately 7:30 p.m., multiple calls were received reporting a fire at the unoccupied building. Firefighters arrived on scene to find flames and smoke billowing from the roof. Crews immediately began battling the blaze, encountering heavy smoke and limited visibility inside the structure. Using two fire trucks, ground ladders, and aerial apparatus, firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the fire. The Norwich Fire Department deployed specialized equipment, including thermal imaging cameras and breathing apparatus, to effectively navigate the smoky conditions and pinpoint the source of the fire. “The fire was well-developed and had spread throughout the warehouse,” said Fire Chief Ken Scandariato. “Our firefighters did an excellent job working in challenging conditions to bring the fire under control.” After several hours of firefighting efforts, the blaze was extinguished at around 10:00 p.m. The warehouse sustained significant damage, but no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office. However, officials believe the building was used for illegal activities, citing evidence of previous break-ins and abandoned personal belongings. “We’re thankful that there were no injuries, but this incident highlights the dangers of abandoned buildings,” said Mayor Peter Nystrom. “We will continue to work with our fire department to address this issue and keep our community safe.” The Norwich Fire Department encourages residents to report any suspicious activity or unoccupied buildings that may pose a risk to public safety.
