Firefighters responded to the scene at the Millbridge Apartments on Brittain Road around 11:00 PM. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from a unit on the second floor. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the damage to the unit was extensive. Four adults and two children were evacuated from the apartment, and two firefighters were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents with shelter, food, and clothing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. According to Akron Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Neal, “It’s a stressful time for the families that have been displaced. We’re doing everything we can to help them through this.” Residents in the building are being advised to check their smoke detectors and make sure they have an escape plan in case of a fire. The community is also urged to be aware of the dangers of smoking inside apartments and other enclosed spaces. The fire serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the need for residents to be prepared in case of an emergency.
