ALMA’s exceptional sensitivity allowed astronomers to pierce through the cosmic veil and observe the cluster’s faint millimeter-wave emission. SPT-CL J2344-4243 is estimated to contain over 100 galaxies, with a combined mass equivalent to trillions of suns. The cluster is so massive that it bends the fabric of space-time, creating a gravitational lens that magnifies and distorts light from distant galaxies behind it. “This discovery pushes the boundaries of our understanding of the universe,” said lead author Jose M. Diego of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Spain. “By observing SPT-CL J2344-4243, we are peering back in time to just 750 million years after the Big Bang.” The cluster’s extreme distance makes it a valuable target for studying the early universe. Astronomers believe that galaxy clusters formed through the gravitational collapse of large clouds of gas and matter shortly after the birth of the cosmos. By analyzing SPT-CL J2344-4243, scientists can gain insights into the conditions that existed in the universe during its formative years. “This cluster is a cosmic time capsule,” said co-author John E.
