The plan, dubbed “Portland: City of Flavors,” aims to create a vibrant and diverse food scene that attracts locals, tourists, and food enthusiasts alike. “Downtown Portland has the potential to become a culinary destination on par with the world’s greatest cities,” said Mayor Ted Wheeler. “This plan will unlock that potential and create a vibrant and thriving community for all.” Central to the plan is the establishment of a new “Food District” in the Pearl District. The district will feature an array of gourmet restaurants, food stalls, and culinary experiences. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample everything from artisanal cheese and charcuterie to international street food. The plan also includes the creation of a “Food Innovation Incubator” to support aspiring chefs and food entrepreneurs. The incubator will provide mentorship, resources, and funding to help entrepreneurs launch their culinary ventures. “We want to make Portland a hub for food innovation,” said Economic Development Director Rachel Knibb. “This incubator will give local entrepreneurs the support they need to bring their ideas to life.” In addition to the food district and incubator, the plan calls for the expansion of the city’s Farmers Market system, the creation of public cooking classes, and the promotion of food-related events and festivals. “This plan is more than just about creating a great place to eat,” said Commissioner Amanda Fritz. “It’s about creating a community that celebrates food and fosters a thriving culinary culture.” The “Portland: City of Flavors” plan has been met with enthusiasm from both the food industry and the public. Restaurateurs and chefs are excited about the opportunity to showcase their culinary talents, while residents and tourists are eager to experience the transformed downtown. “This plan is a game-changer for Portland,” said chef Gabriel Rucker of Lechon. “It will make our city a culinary destination that rivals San Francisco or New York.” Construction on the first phase of the plan is expected to begin in early 2023. The entire plan is projected to be completed by 2027. When finished, downtown Portland will be a lively and vibrant culinary destination that attracts food lovers from around the world.
