Baton Rouge Buzz: Local Zoo Welcomes New Giraffe CalfBaton Rouge Buzz: Local Zoo Welcomes New Giraffe Calf The Baton Rouge Zoo is abuzz with excitement as it welcomes a new addition to its giraffe family: a bouncing baby giraffe calf! The calf, a female weighing in at 150 pounds, was born on June 20th to proud parents, Azul and Willow. Both mother and calf are doing well and have been spending their days bonding in a secluded area away from the public eye. “We are thrilled to have a new giraffe calf join our zoo family,” said Zoo Director Phil Frost. “Giraffes are one of our most popular animals, and the birth of a new calf is always a special occasion.” The calf’s arrival marks the third giraffe birth at the Baton Rouge Zoo in recent years. The previous births were in 2019 and 2021. “We are very proud of our giraffe breeding program,” said Frost. “We hope that the birth of this new calf will help raise awareness about the importance of giraffe conservation.” Giraffes are the tallest land animals on Earth. They are native to Africa and are threatened by habitat loss and poaching. The Baton Rouge Zoo is part of a global effort to protect endangered species. The new giraffe calf will make her public debut in the coming weeks. In the meantime, zoo visitors can catch a glimpse of the calf and her mother through the birth announcement sign posted near the giraffe enclosure. The Baton Rouge Zoo is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, visit the zoo’s website at www.brzoo.org.
